As the last stage in my retirement from photography, I’m selling my negatives from my 2004-2007 body of work in a 10 day auction via eBay. I’m hoping to raise enough money, around £35,000, to be able to produce a feature documentary film detailing my ongoing Bodybuilding project for a release date in late 2013. You can view the auction here or by clicking the image above.

Retirement is a strange concept for any artist to consider but you might have already heard that that’s what I’m doing, I’m hanging up my camera for good. I can’t think of any another artist who has specifically retired, except for Rimbaud when he declared he would no longer write poetry. I’m no Rimbaud but I do know when I’m done.

There are a number of reasons but, first and foremost, it’s because it no longer gives me the enjoyment and creative spark it once did and it hasn’t done for some time now. It’s been great and I’ve met some wonderful, extraordinary, talented people along the way (including most of my photographic heroes like Slava Mogutin, Bruce LaBruce, Nan Goldin and Wolfgang Tillmans) and had some amazing opportunities which I’m extremely thankful for. However, I think I’ve said everything I ever wanted to say with photography and, in fact, probably said it with the first photoshoot I ever did in 2004 with a friend of mine called Ryan. One single image from that shoot (Ryan showing off his muscles, 2004) encapsulated all my photographic ideas and that shoot remains my favourite. It’s closely followed by the last shoot I did, this time with a friend called Jeff at the end of 2011.

Second, and here I’m echoing JD Samson’s article in the Huffington Post from October of last year, I want to be in a position where I can create work that I’m proud of whilst not making a product out of it because I have to make a living. A lot of people think I’m successful but how do we measure success? If it means I’ve been involved in a few exhibitions and my work has been seen in some magazines then, yes, I’m successful. However, if it means knowing when the next pay day might be or being able to pay my rent then I’m a monumental failure as I’m always broke and have been ever since I pursued the idea that I could be an artist. I’ve put any money that I have made straight back into making work and that has, at times, and quite literally, left me both hungry and without a roof over my head to call my own. It’s only thanks to the love of my friends and family and a handful of supporters of my work that I’ve managed to make it this far. I’m eternally grateful to them but it can’t continue.

With that in mind, and over the coming days and weeks, I’m going to be selling off all remaining photographic prints from my 2004-2007 body of work (some 70 plus individual photographs totalling hundreds of prints) as well as some newer works and both my negatives and even my trusty ol’ Yashica T5 camera on which most of the photographs were taken. Please email me if you would like a list of available works. Any unsold works will then be auctioned off via eBay.

Many thanks for your support over the years and although I’ll no longer be behind the camera, for those of you following my Bodybuilding project, you’ll certainly be seeing more of me in front of it.

Before I ever picked up a camera I wrote. A lot. Most of what I wrote were screenplays as film/TV/the moving image has always been my biggest pleasure. However, back in 2001, whilst living and studying in Manchester, I wrote my first short story and I was very surprised that it got published. I called it G-A-Y (after the now legendary but sadly defunct London club) and eventually expanded it into a feature length screenplay that was optioned by a film production company in 2003 but never produced. I’m going to make the entire screenplay available on the Kindle Store (as soon as I figure out a few formatting issues) but before I do that I wanted to share the original story.

Humor within a fine art context is often looked down upon. If all it does is make one smile or make one laugh then does it really have any value as art? Spanning almost 20 years and with a focus on the male form, the works I’ve selected for January’s web gallery are in turns sexual, political, celebratory and most definitely have a sense of humor.

Of course, recognizing the power of retaining a sense of humor in adversity is intrinsic to the human condition in overcoming it and is one of the few concepts that separates us from our animal cousins. No apes sit around regaling each other with tales of mirth about a lost companion. Or do they? It could be that we simply don’t understand.  (read more)

About the Curator:

Stuart Sandford received his B.A. Fine Art, with Honours, in 2006. He has exhibited his photographic, video and installation work in New York, London, Berlin, Basel, Rotterdam, Rome, Madrid, Copenhagen and Vienna, amongst others. In 2010 he curated the group show HUNG and co-curated Boy BANG Boy, both of which took place in London. His work has been featured in magazines internationally, including BUTT, GT, Maenner, Kaiserin, attitude and Basso, and he is currently embarking on a year long performance project entitled Bodybuilding. He lives and works in London.
